Gov. Assignment is for various government insurance programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and others. Many of the government programs sometimes ignore the entry, or lack of entry, in the Accept Patient Assignment box. Those programs look primarily at box 27 of the CMS-1500 form. Placing a check in the Gov. Assignment checkbox makes the Yes entry in box 27. If there is no check in the box the No will be checked. If you accept assignment, be sure that both the Accept patient assignment and Gov. Assignment boxes are checked. If you do NOT accept assignment, be sure that both of these boxes are NOT checked.
